FLATMII streams games to your Wii, via USB

Nintendo has gone to some lengths to keep one step ahead of the modding community, but to little avail. We’ve recently seen a product that enables DVD playback on the Wii, and now we’ve been hepped to FLATMII, a device that plugs into the Wii’s drive ribbon, letting you stream ISO backups of your games (or the Gecko OS, Mplayer, emulators and more) from your Windows XP or Vista PC — which your console now takes for its DVD drive. If you’re the sort of sane and sober Wii owner who figures that it is wise and prudent to backup games that you own legally — the kind who would never ever ever think of stealing software — hit that read link. And be sure to catch the video after the break.

PlayStation Home full of immature jokers, unlike other virtual communities

It’s not been a good month for Sony. Layoffs, poor holiday sales for the PS3 and a wee bit of hacking over at PlayStation Home surely have the electronics giant hungry for some good press, which has made the newest PR kerfuffle over at the nascent online service quite unfortunate. According to Ars Technica, Home has become something akin to the nightmare futurescape of The Warriors, a service “incredibly unwelcoming to women, with female players quickly mobbed as players dance around them or type sexual come-ons… a disturbing look at the worst part of human nature.” This is heady stuff, but as the company is quick to point out, the thing is still in Beta, and it’s still evolving — hopefully, as it becomes more popular the free service will move itself out of the adolescent ghetto. In the mean time, they’ve been rocking a bit of good old fashioned censorship, banning words like “gay,” “Jew,” and “Hell” — perfectly understandishable if you’ve ever spent a minute on any online gaming service, but highly uncool if you’re trying to build any sort of inclusive social network. In the meantime, what’s a homosexual Jewish Satanist to do? There’s always Second Life…

Wireless keyboard / controller / remote control for PS3 could make your day / week / month

We’ve seen some goofy looking PS3 accessories — including Sony’s recent Wireless Keypad for the PS3 — but this one looks like a little bit of crazy mixed with a dab of mediocrity. A product of unknown make, the creatively dubbed “PS3 3-in-1 Wireless keyboard controller remote” certainly looks like it could function in a mind-blowingly awesome fashion — though we haven’t yet gotten our hands on an actual unit yet, so we can’t say for sure. It’s available now for an inviting $28.52.

Xbox 360 PS3 case many Dremel bits = PS360

Xbox 360 PS3 case many Dremel bits = PS360
Apparently impressed by the stunning success (and $157 winning bid) of his earlier Wii64, the modder who goes by the name n8bog is back with another brute-force console hybrid, this time shoving an entire Xbox 360 into a disused PS3 case. We wouldn’t say it’s a perfect fit, as there’s been a rather large hole cut into the front to allow access to the tray, and that HDD just laying on top of the DVD-ROM looks a bit precarious, but if you have a hankerin’ for something Microsoft but prefer the look of something Sony (or just really like gratuitous neon) all this can be yours at a starting bid of just $100. Any takers?

PS3 unable to hold its own against Wii, Xbox 360 this holiday season

Considering the way that the Wii flew off shelves last month, this next item probably won’t come as a shock to anyone. According to the Wall Street Journal, both Nintendo’s console and the Xbox 360 trounced the PS3 in holiday sales, with U.S. sales falling nine percent from this month last year. During this same period, sales doubled for the Wii and rose eight percent for the Xbox 360. Perhaps none of this should be a surprise, as Sony declined to cut prices on their system, while a lack of exclusive game titles and a number of inexpensive Blu-ray players went a long way towards making the PS3 the least attractive option in an already difficult retail climate. If anything, it looks like Sony won’t be able to rely on the console to help prop up a flagging electronics division that just announced it will be cutting thousands of jobs in a bid to boost profitability going into 2009. Happy New Year, indeed.

IXtreme 1.5 unlocks your non-Hitachi spinning Xbox 360

IXtreme 1.5 unlocks your non-Hitachi spinning Xbox 360We love a good hacker vs. hardware battle, and while Microsoft has thus far done a reasonably good job of keeping miscreants from diddling with the details of the Xbox 360’s firmware, applying patches and dropping ban hammers on those who don’t comply, as of this morning it seems to be losing the arms race. Team Jungle has released version 1.5 of its IXtreme firmware, allowing for (relatively) easy cracking and unlocking of Xbox 360 consoles containing LiteOn, BenQ, and Samsung DVD drives (i.e. the majority of them). That leaves only Hitachi owners out in the cold, but if that’s you don’t fret: your version is just a few weeks away. Happy homebrewing!

Xbox 360 gets stylish Domo-kun paint job

It may not be quite as elaborate as some console paint jobs, but if you’re looking to add a touch of Japan to your Xbox 360, you may want to follow the lead of deviantART member Ricepuppet, who has managed to create a relatively faithful Domo-kun themed console. As you can see above, that even includes a matching controller, which we presume is still fully functional (and, apparently, twice as likely to slip out of your hands). Just don’t go too nuts and decide to pair it with a Hello Kitty-themed Wii, there’s no telling how they might get along.

Jasper Xbox 360 Pro acquired: the photograph is proof

So yeah, finding an Xbox 360 Jasper in Arcade form isn’t all that difficult these days, but we certainly haven’t seen a glut of Pro models shipping out with the supposedly cooler, smoother and altogether more melancholy Jasper hardware within. A lucky soul over at PDAToday has acquired one such unit, and while he may just be incredibly fortunate, we’d say it’s about time you to-be Pro owners start looking out for a few telltale signs. As you can see in the closeups in the read link, there here FDOU team Pro — which was ordered from Amazon on December 22nd — boasts a 12.1 amp rating and the unmistakable Jasper power port. Of note, it did come bundled with a Falcon revision (175-watt) power supply just like Ben Heck’s Jasper Arcade, though we suspect Microsoft is just clearing out excess inventory given that the older PSU won’t damage the Jasper machines. Any others out there run into any holiday luck? Let us know!

WeeP5 makes other Wiimote gun mods cry home to their mamas

If your Wiimote-gun hybrid lacks a little bit of that “I would shut down an airport having this in my carry-on luggage” panache, we suggest you check out WeeP5, a toy MP5 chock-full of motion control. To be honest, we’re most enamored by the setup of the above picture, as the modded armament rests lovingly over the heads of a young couple, against a picture of men in togas, and just under a VHS copy of The Lost World in German — it’s just so beautiful. In case you’re wondering: B button is the trigger, A button is under the foregrip, 1 and 2 are on opposite sides near the front, the D-pad and Wii remote are jutting out of the left side, and the , -, and home buttons are on the top just above the ammo clip. Hit up the read link for full DIY instructions.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXIV: MiWi2 Wiipoff spotted in London shop

We’re pretty sure that Nintendo doesn’t have anything to fear when it comes to the MiWi2, a Wii knockoff that was first spotted by Engadget Korea back in June. However, we were surprised to see the fake on sale somewhere outside of Asia — or really anywhere for that matter. Yes, unknowing parents may have accidentally snagged one of these rip-offs instead of the real deal at an unnamed London shop, but rest assured, your little darlings probably let you know once they unwrapped it and realized you got them the wrong damn thing.
